Velma McBride, age 91, of McCook, NE passed away Friday, August 31, 2018 at Hillcrest Nursing Home in McCook.
Velma was born October 12, 1926 in McCook to parents Gus and Mary (Crocker) Berndt. She was one of four children born to this union. Velma grew up on the family farm south of McCook. She attended Marion Grade School and later attended McCook High School.
Velma remained in McCook following high school and was employed by J.C. Penny’s where she worked as a cashier and bookkeeper.
On December 21, 1946, Velma married the love of her life, Robert McBride. The couple made their home on a farm north of Indianola, NE and was blessed with a daughter Diane. After a time, Robert and Velma began farming outside of Danbury where a second daughter, Sandy, was born. Velma enjoyed being a housewife, mother and taking care of the bookwork for the farm.
Following retirement in 1990, the couple then bought a home in McCook, eventually settling into Highland Park in 2017.
Velma and Robert were members of both St. Catherine’s Catholic Church in Indianola and St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in McCook. Velma was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary, the Altar Society and PT Ladies Card Club as well as various other card groups. She enjoyed crocheting, sewing, painting, reading and collecting dolls.
Velma was preceded in death by her parents, Gus and Mary Berndt; two brothers and a sister in law, Raymond (Dorothy) Berndt and Gilbert Berndt; her loving in laws and numerous nieces and nephews.
Those left to mourn her passing include her husband, Robert McBride of McCook; daughters, Diane (Pete) Sabaliauskas of Gretna, NE and Sandy (Mike) Kotschwar of Omaha, NE; brother, Dean (Helen) Berndt of McCook; sisters in law, Phyllis Berndt of McCook and Ruth Schuster of Denver, CO; brother in law, Jim (Ida) McBride of Holbrook, NE; five grandchildren, Brad (Margo) Farrell of Minneapolis, MN, John (Amanda) Farrell of West Des Moines, IA, Lance Farrell also of Minneapolis, Stephanie (Kyle) Holmgren of Omaha and Brett (Sarah) Kotschwar of Lincoln, NE; nine great grandchildren Arianna, Lucas and Colette Farrell, Sophina and
