Virgil Ayers Wilson of Culbertson died Wednesday, November 9, 2005 at McCook Community Hospital. He was 78 years old.
Virgil was born on January 29, 1927, in Hayes County, Nebraska to Dorsey and Lulu M. (Gray) Wilson. He graduated from Hayes County High School in 1943. On January 18, 1946, he entered the US Army and served during World War II. He was honorably discharged on April 2, 1947.
Virgil married Norma Brecht on August 22, 1948, at Culbertson. To this union three sons and three daughters were born. Virgil was owner/operator of Wauneta Electric. He also was a farmer and owned a large hog operation. In later years he worked for the University of Nebraska, retiring in 1995.
He was a member of the Culbertson Trinity United Methodist Church. He was an avid sports fan, and enjoyed woodworking, fishing and hunting.
Preceding him in death were his parents, Dorsey and Lula Wilson; and one great-grandchild.
Survivors include his wife, Norma of Culbertson; three sons, (Virgil) Ray Wilson and wife, Connie, of Brunsville, Iowa, Ken Wilson and wife, Cindy, of Culbertson and Dan Wilson and friend, Ron, of Denver, CO; three daughters, Jane and husband, Richard Braden, of Omaha, Karen and husband, Skip Krepcik, of Norfolk, VA and Polly and husband, Craig Weskamp, of Aurora, CO; two brothers, Dwaine Wilson and wife, Kay, of Lincoln and Darwin Wilson and wife, Pat, of Culbertson; four sisters, Velma Walker of Maywood, Vonda and husband, Paul Gigax, of Hayes Center, Shirley and husband, Jack Bishop, of Culbertson and Sharon and husband, Jerry Felker, of Greeley, CO; 18 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be given in his name.
Funeral services will be Saturday, November 12, 2005, 2:30 p.m. at Trinity United Methodist Church in Culbertson. Burial will be Monday, November 14, 2005, 11:00 a.m. at Fort McPherson National Cemetery at Maxwell.
Visitation will be Friday, from 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Friends may go online at www.carpenterbreland.com to extend condolences.
