Wayne "Bud" E. Callan
June 6, 1919 — July 13, 2005
Wayne “Bud” Eldon Callan, 86, formerly of Bartley, died Wednesday, July 13, 2005 at Cozad Community Hospital. He was born June 6, 1919 in Red Willow County to Henry H. and Mildred E. (Wolfe) Callan. He attended Zion Hill School in rural Frontier County. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II from 1941 until 1946.
He married Charlotte Maxine Hall in Santa Maria, CA on July 5, 1942, to this union two children were born, Roger and Rodney. She preceded him in death in June of 1990. On January 2, 1991 he married Athol May Duncan in McCook.
He was a heavy equipment operator for several construction companies throughout his life. He worked on many projects including Harry Strunk, Swanson and Hugh Butler Reserviors and the Frenchman Canal. He also worked on Tiber Dam in Montana. He was an exceptional baseball player in Indianola and Bartley, and later coached in Bartley. He was well-known for his pitching talent but was unable to pursue a professional career due to World War II. He was a member of American Legion in Bartley, VFW in Lebanon, McCook Elk’s Club, and NRA. He loved to hunt and fish and especially enjoyed being a great grandparent. He was also an avid golfer and rarely missed a day of golf in either Cambridge or Arapahoe where he was proud of his hole in one.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Charlotte; 1 granddaughter, Marcia Elizabeth Callan; 3 step-grandchildren, twin boys Larry and Lonnie Foster and Kristy Sayer.
Survivors include his wife Athol of Cozad; two sons, Roger Callan and wife Shirley of Cozad and Rodney Callan and wife Barbara of Colorado Springs, CO; two grandsons, Russell Callan and wife, Karla, of Ord and Chris Callan of Lincoln; two great-grandchildren Riley and Ryan Callan of Ord; two sisters, Marjorie Hall and wife, Harold, of McCook and Lila Zoltay of Denver, CO; two brothers, Delbert “Hoop” Callan and wife, Peggy, of Loveland, CO and Neal Callan and wife, Anita, of McCook. He is also survived by step-children Beverly Foster and husband Jim of Lexington and Linda Sayer and husband Howard of Cambridge, Ron Hansen and wife Kathy of Bartley and Ivan Hansen and wife Julie of Imperial; 12 step-grandchildren; and 13 step-great-grand children.
Memorials can be given to the Bartley Fire Department and Ambulance.
Funeral services were Monday, July 18, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Dr. Jeff Thurman officiating. Burial took place in Fort McPherson National Cemetery in Maxwell with full military honors.
Carpenter Breland Funeral Home was in charge of the arrangements.
