William Joseph Ortiz, Sr.

William Ortiz, Sr. (Bill) died Monday, February 8, 2016 at his home in McCook. He was 49 years old.

Bill was born in McCook on October 24, 1966 to Charles D. and Margaret A. (Castle) Ortiz. He graduated from McCook High School in 1985 and then enlisted in the Army. He honorably served from 1985 to 1986 and then again during the Gulf War Era from 1987 to 1990. He would later go on to earn his Associates of Art degree with honors from McCook Community College in 2013. He worked for Parker for fifteen years and dedicated his free time to being a counselor at the jail. Bill was an avid fisherman with over 24 master anglers. He enjoyed hunting and was an intellectual authority on all things Husker football.

Survivors include his son, William “Billy” Ortiz of McCook; daughters, Shaunita Schartz of McCook, Alecia Ortiz and Sierra Ortiz, both of Danville, IL; stepdaughter, Brandi Weathers also of Danville, IL; mother, Mary Ortiz of McCook; brothers, David (Vickie) Ortiz and Thomas Ortiz both of McCook; sisters, Tamrah (Lyle) Straube of Lincoln, Sheila M. Jaramillo and Robin Ortiz both of McCook; four grandchildren, Violet and Myles Schartz and Carter and Lily Roberson.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Ortiz; and daughter, Tianna Ortiz.

Visitation will be Thursday, February 11, 2016 from 1:00 – 8:00 p.m. with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home.

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 12, 2016 at 2 p.m. at Carpenter Breland Funeral Home with Pastor Steve Bales officiating. Burial with Military Honors will be in Calvary Cemetery.

Memorials may be given in his name.

Carpenter Breland Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.

There will be a potluck at the Community building on the Red Willow County Fairgrounds after the service. It will be open to the public from 4-7 pm.  Anyone can feel free to bring a dish and visit.
